UPDATE March, 22nd 2014: With the BIOS/driver update published by Toshiba last week there is no need for using 3rd party drivers at all. Intel platform driver is the most recent version that can be found on the web, audio driver supports Dolby now and Toshibas Bluetooth/WLAN/GPS drivers are almost up to date. No longer wasting time for driver mixing effort - thanks to Toshiba engineers

______________________________________________________________________

As Toshibas driver page still maintains outdated driver versions and some problems popped up while working with the tablet I started searching for more recent drivers from other vendors to mix them up to a functional driver package. I would like to share my experiences, feel free to add comments, additions or corrections if you like.

Driver sources:

- Dell Venue 8 Pro: Intel Platform Driver Installer Version 603.9600.2067.26305, A03 as of Dec. 12th 2013 from their support website

- Acer W4-820: Intel Driver Package Version 1.02 as of Dec. 5th 2013 from their support website

- Lenovo Miix 2-8: Realtek Audio Driver for Windows 8.1 32-bit Version 6.2.9600.4053 as of Jan. 5th 2014 from their support website

- Windows Update

Short problem history with my Encore:

Out of the box without Windows Update the Encore Camera App has no panorama function and no resolution or other advanced settings are possible. The audio device settings are quite plain - no advanced settings are possible. WLAN stability and performance is weak, GPS/GNSS and Bluetooth work with basic functionality. Display duplication via HDMI cable is a no go, only an enhanced desktop can be delegated to an external HDMI device. I started Windows Update first and at least the Camera Panorama function re-appeared but suddenly massive problems with my SD-Card with I/O errors in the event log came up. Then I started fiddling around with different drivers available in the web for similar hardware platforms with the following result:

Display driver:

The only driver that works properly for me using the display duplication to an external HDMI device is the DELL driver. I experienced no problems using this driver with the Encore tablet, all display modes work fine and audio streams are also transferred to the HDMI device.

Audio driver:

After trying different drivers for the Realtek I2S chipset I finally ended up with Lenovos recent driver for the Realtek audio chip. You ll get a new entry in the control panel that allows you to select different mic profiles for VoIP applications. In the mic settings the input level boost 24dB adjustment is still necessary even with this driver.

Camera:

Surprisingly the camera driver included in the DELL platform package works without any flaws with the Encore tablet. It seems like the hardware is similar. If you need additional settings while taking pictures search for Camera 365 in the app store. This is an Toshiba exclusive application that works quite well and offers a lot of additional settings for taking pictures focus, brightness, picture format/resolution,

SD-Card:

Worked out of the box but was messed up by Windows Update. Microsoft recently published a new rollup-update for Windows 8.1 and currently I do not experience any problems with i/o errors in the event log with all windows updates installed. Seems like they fixed the problem

WLAN/Bluetooth/GPS:

Most recent drivers for these Broadcom devices are included in the Acer platform driver package and with these driver package installed I experienced a good WLAN performance/stability, good GPS accuracy and Bluetooth works reliable. There are other Broadcom drivers available i.e. search for iogear bluetooth driver 12.0.0.8030 that are not included in the Intel platform package but I haven t played around with them yet.

Installation recommendation:

- After a factory reset of the Encore first of all Windows Update packages should be installed. This should provide you with a recent Win 8.1 system, the panorama function for the camera app appears and the SD-Card interface remains functional;-

- Then start the DELL platform installer and install the complete package. This updates the display driver for a working duplicate screen option and all other Intel devices to a recent version. Do that at your own risk as this might cause side effects that I haven t observed on my Encore, yet;- If you re not brave enough to install the whole package you should extract the package, stop the automatic installation and update only the display driver with the have disk method in the driver section of the display entry in the device manager pointing to the GFX folder in the extracted driver package.

- If you re still brave enough you can customize the Acer driver by stripping down the package to only the modules you d like to be installed. You can do that by manually editing the config.xml file before starting the installer setup.exe. I deleted the entries for the camera camera.inf, ov2722.inf and ov5693.inf, the display 57862.inf and firmware BIOS_1.11.inf. This is a bit tricky and only experienced users should try this approach. Skip this step if you re satisfied with the functionality provided by the DELL driver package

- Finally simply run the Realtek installer from the Lenovo website to get a recent driver for the audio device – with at least some basic options in control panel for that device

With this approach I m a happy camper with my Encore tablet, even with basic driver support by Toshiba.

Bernd

for all of you that are still in the driver mixing mood after Toshiba s official driver release last month here are some updated drivers recommendations from other vendors for compatible Encore components. I installed these drivers on my Encore with BIOS v1.60, Toshibas latest official platform driver v10E and Toshiba s official Dolby package on a Windows 8.1 Update 1 system:

Bluetooth: Broadcomm driver 12.0.0.9090 on ASUS s support site for the T100A: stable and reliable BT driver, no problems with BT mouse-/keyboard-connection after connected standby.

WLAN: Broadcomm driver 5.93.100.20 from Lenovo s Thinkpad 8 support site: stable and reliable driver for the WLAN unit. Fixes signal strength and WiFi coexistence issues. Much better signal strength and connection stability in combination with my old SMC WLAN router.

GPS: Broadcomm driver 20.18.1477.17 from Lenovo s Miix 2 10 support site: most current driver for this unit on the web, works stable and reliable with the Encore.

Audio: Realtek driver 6.2.9600.4095 from Lenovo s Thinkpad 8 support site: fixes some crackling issues after pausing audio/video streams, implements a Realtek control panel in the system settings with some advanced audio options. Dolby functionality is not affected, works still fine after installing this driver.

Power consumption in connected standby mode is really minimal on my Encore with this driver setup. powercfg -batteryreport states 440h estimated lifetime in connected standby mode with fully charged batteries - that s quite impressive. Idle time is 99 and all active devices work really power efficient. All these figures are based on a logged-of-mode - if you re logged in with many apps running in the background the power consuption of these background tasks will drain some additional power, of course.

Happy tweaking

This is really odd. I have a Wimbooted original Encore 32gig with the original Win 8.1 32 bit core with no security software other than the built in Windows utilities. I have basic printer driver, MS Office and the Logitech unifying utility installed. And Steam. All else is apps.

I have tried installing the graphics driver from your link every which way and it refuses. If I try to install using the setup executable, it skips the graphics due to an error according to the Intel log though the setup utility claims everything installed fine. If I try to update my Intel HD graphics driver through Device Manager/I Have Disk initially it warns me that it cannot confirm the driver is compatible with my hardware, and if I force it it claims the error that it is not compatible with this version of the OS . . The driver I am trying to update to is the 60200.inf file in the GFX directory that is auto-unpacked from the setup utility in the download link you provide.

I uninstalled my graphics driver and deleted the driver, reverting the the basic MS adapter driver. Same issue, can t update to the new vid driver or install with the executable. The batch file doesn t do it either, by the way.

I download the Intel platform drivers from Toshiba UK and all installs fine. Old versions, of course.

Still the same errors when I try to update to the new driver from there.

Exactly the same happened with the Thinkpad 10 drivers.

What can I be doing wrong. I am not usually as dense as this. What am I missing.

UPDATE

I have checked my hardware ID for the gfx and it is as follows:

PCI VEN_8086 DEV_0F31 SUBSYS_FAF01179

This matches the ID in the 58903.inf gfx driver file that comes with the Intel platform package from Toshiba for the Encore.

The IDs in the Lenovo 60200.inf gfx driver are as follows two hardware IDs listed :

PCI VEN_8086 DEV_0F31 SUBSYS_221B17AA

PCI VEN_8086 DEV_0F31 SUBSYS_221C17AA

No wonder it isn t installing and hence falling through to a wrong OS version error as h/w IDs are batched by OS version in the inf file and if none match then it runs out of OS version entries. This driver is for a different ID number.

Now, I can force it by adding my h/w ID to the inf file, but is that a good idea. Do you have a different vid chip in your Encore What can be going on here.
